Visual demo only. Copy the prompt below to get the app.

Build it yourself

Real files on your machine, a real database, and it is yours. This one carries the interface as well — the layout, the colours and the shape of the real app, read off its own screens.

Each opens with the prompt loaded and waiting — nothing is sent until you press enter. It is copied at the same time, in case the app is not installed.

Build me a local video editor I own, to replace CapCut.

- A CLI plus a local timeline page: Node, Express and better-sqlite3 for the project, ffmpeg for anything that touches pixels.
- Model the edit, not the video: a clip is a row with a source file, in and out points, order, speed, volume and the transition to the next. Nothing re-encodes until export.
- Titles as their own rows with a start, a duration and a position, burned in with drawtext at export.
- Captions from whisper.cpp locally: word timestamps grouped three to five words a line, written to an .srt I can fix by hand, then re-burned as ASS without transcribing again. Free after the model download.
- Music as its own track row, mixed under the clip audio with amix, with a gain and a fade.
- Export with a real encoder rather than by recording a preview: h264 at 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9 by centre crop or blur pad, written beside the project, never over a source.
- One command to render a project, one to back up the database and its media.
- Binds to localhost only. No accounts, no telemetry, nothing uploaded.
- Skip: the licensed music library, the trending templates and the AI tools. The tracks are a rights contract, the templates are other editors' work.
- Include a README with setup, installing ffmpeg, choosing a whisper model size, and where projects live.

## Look and feel

CapCut's own — a dark editor, near-black panels, the timeline the centrepiece with the preview above, a bright cyan-teal accent on the playhead and selected clip. Generous spacing, clear hierarchy, big tap targets, phone-readable type, system font. Keep the text dark enough to read at a glance: the softness of a palette belongs to the shapes and the fills, never to the words. Nothing I need to read — dates, numbers, labels — in pale grey on white.

Feature by feature

Every feature, whether AI can rebuild it, and what you would be signing up to keep running if you did. The paid app does that last column for you, and that is most of what the money buys.

FeatureCoreAI can rebuildYou'd maintain
Timeline: trim, split, reorder and delete clipsA timeline is a list of clips with in and out points. The browser plays video and knows what time it is, which is most of the job.YesYesNothing
Text and titles on any clipYesYesNothing
Captions timed to the wordsSpreading words across a clip and highlighting the current one is easy. Working out what was said is the part that needs a speech model, and that costs money every time it runs.YesPartlyYou would type what is said
Speed: slow motion, fast forward and freezeYesYesNothing
Transitions and filters between clipsYesYesNothing
Export the finished video to your camera rollA browser can record its own canvas to a file, but it does it in real time and not every phone browser supports it.YesPartlyRecording the preview back is slower than a real encoder
The licensed music and sound effects libraryThose tracks are cleared for posting by a company paying for the rights. That is a contract, not code.YesNoBring your own audio and clear it yourself
Templates: drop your clips into somebody else's editEvery template was made by another editor, and the good ones are trending this week. There is no prompt for that.NoNoYou would cut it yourself
AI tools: background removal, retouch, auto-cutNoNoCosts money per video

What you give up

  • music you are allowed to post with
  • captions that write themselves from the audio
  • the templates that are trending this week
  • an export that takes seconds instead of real time

Why people still pay

The timeline is the easy half and always was. CapCut is free because it feeds TikTok, and what people would actually miss is the cleared music and the template somebody posted yesterday, neither of which is code.

Or use one somebody already built

Free and open source. No prompt, no building, no subscription.

Shotcut
A proper free video editor with a real timeline and a real encoder. Desktop only, and it looks its age. (windows, macos, linux)
Kdenlive
Free, multi-track, and closer to a professional editor than anything on a phone. Steeper to learn. (windows, macos, linux)
CapCut free tier
Worth saying plainly: trimming, captions, text and export are already free. Pro mostly buys the effects library and the AI tools. (web, ios, android, windows, macos)

What does CapCut cost?
Pricing varies by plan.
Is there a free alternative to CapCut?
Yes: Shotcut, Kdenlive, CapCut free tier. They are listed below, and they are somebody else's finished work rather than yours.
